1966 FENDER JAZZ BASS, SUNBURST, PLAYERS INSTRUMENT, SOUTH AMERICAN ROSEWOOD,J
azz Bass made in 1966 with a stately specification has arrived! It is a popular model year for players because it can be used in all genres with the addition of high-frequency growth to the stable low-frequency range that is typical of the 60s model. This bass has seen many a stage and/or studio over the years. Not only is there age-appropriate deterioration and usability wear. Starting with the pickguard, there is visible shrinkage with the lower horn missing its tip and a crack in the guard on the upper bout separating the guard above the neck until the end of the neck as pictured. There are some paint peeling remains, blistering and finger indents from use above and between the pickups to the bridge. No bridge cover here and the open screw holes are visible. All hardware and pickguard are secure and there is no movement. Paint and edge wear can be seen around the body with the finish worn off at the top of the lower bout where many rest their arm. The back of the body shows the same edge wear with the finish rubbing off at the top of the upper bout on the back to some naked wood close to the neck plate. There is deterioration, weather checks and scratches on the painted top which you can view in the pictures. You can check the paint burn that seems to have occurred when storing the case, mainly on the body back.
The neck is an “A” width maple neck with South American Rosewood fretboard. The maple shows appropriate wear for the age and playing time. Finish checking can be seen towards neck heel. The general feel of the back of the neck is smooth and vintage with no bid dings or gouges. Towards the headstock, there is some finish wear that takes it to the wood. Chrome tuners are in good working order and are non-reverse. Front of the headstock shows a cigarette burn. Frets are good with no divots. They appear to be original and have a good deal of life on them. The nut shows the most wear, but it is still intact and functioning well, but it shows it age.
The neck date appears to be made in 1966 from "MAY 66". There may be a number before it, but age and wear had made it unreadable. Pot date was also ended with "6618" on all three pots. Pickups are original and work great. The set-up is clean and clear with all notes sounding good. Finally, this bass was owned by Berklee bass educator Tom Stein with his last transaction's emails in the case. We hope this info is helpful to your decision but let us know of any questions you may have. We know she looks a bit rough, but it's all there and sounds wonderful.
