Circa 1899 Adams & Westlake "Adlake" Magazine Camera!
With its roots dating back to 1857 with the manufacture and sales of railroad supplies and hardware, the Adams & Westlake Company of Chicago, Illnois is primarly known as America's most successful railroad lantern maker. Its name emerged with the merger of the companies of English immigrants John McGregor Adams and William Westlake in 1874 at which time the companies were deversified not only manufacturing and selling train supplies but also the popular Alaska & Adlake bicycles, Monarch oil stoves and brass beds.In 1896 the company acquired photographic camera patent 598,804 and magazine camera patent 598,738. In 1897 the company introduced the Adlake cameras "Regular", "Special", and "Repeater." The camera's were very successful continuing in production into the 1920's. Their magazine cameras (i.e. box cameras with rear plate storage) used alternate plate holders with hinged front door.
This wonderful circa 1899 Adlake Camera uses plate holders with a hinged cover back over the light sebnsiutuve side of the plate. The closed plate holder had to be transfered manually from the magazine in the camera back tnto the plate holder opening section. After closing the door the plate holder opening lever beneath the camera's leather handle was uised to open the film holder for exposure. The camera is approximately 5¾" x 8½" x 6¼".
It is in good to very good condition.
