Here's a nice clean condition Joseph Schnell leathered split willow basket creel. Schnell was a saddle maker at John Clark Saddlery in Portland, Oregon until they were sold to Marshall Wells company in the late 20's, Somewhere in the 20's he started leathering creels on the side and continued to do so until his death in the early 50's. His creels are very high quality heavily embossed cow hide leather and most all were done on split willow baskets. The markings on Schnell creels were done with a rubber stamp and black ink rather than with an embossed stamp so many of his marks are difficult to read or are simply worn off. This one has the name of a former owner marked on it. The basket shows some minor breakage on the board on the creel bottom but the leather is in fine shape. This is a number 50 and measures 16 inches wide at it's widest point and has a flat back as did most creels of this vintage (early 30's). This is a nice large full basket and is very attractive. A very nice example of Mr. Schnell's craftmanship.
