Description
Here is a very rare 4x5 Scovill Detective Camera circa 1885. It is the first model with the red bellows. The camera comes with its three original plate holders. The outer leather covering is in great shape for its age showing some wear and is missing a few tiny pieces of leather. The string set shutter cocks and fires. It has its original Morrison lens on it with the waterhouse stops present in the case that is attached to the bellows which was how the camera was made. It has its two viewfinders on the top but the one on the side does not focus at infinity. The ground glass back is present but sections of both ground glass retention springs have broken off. Both the front and rear sliding doors work. The strap is original. This is one of the rarest American detective cameras made. The catalog page showed at the end of the pictures is one I found online from the 1885 catalog. The camera makes a beautiful display piece when displayed with the top open.
